August 3, Stage 28

August 3, Circleville, OH to Parkersburg, WV, 101 miles, approx 3000 climbing ft. Beautiful day of riding, even with the rain for the first couple of hours. We were cleary moving toward the beginning of the mountains. Foggy cloudy mists hung over wooded peaks. After the rain, we had winding roads that draped overall the undulating terrain. We took a bike trail that skirted the campus of Ohio University, then on the shoulder of US 50. After lunch we had more beautifUl wooded winding roads for 10 miles, then more of the shoulder of US 50, which took us most of the way to the Ohio River and Parkersburg. 101 mile day helped, giving a chance for some added rest in anticipation of the next two mountainous days.

  2. Ellery--I'm a friend of Amy Ellen's from seminary, and a cyclist myself. AE pointed me to your blog and I've enjoyed reading of your trip and have thought of you several times during the days past, "Wonder how Ellery's doing today?"

I hope you have enough energy to enjoy these last few days. You have inspired me! Ride on!

  3. The foggy mountain breakdown sounds nice. I'm glad it was a shorter day and the scenery was inspiring. I bet taking US 50 made you feel a little closer to your roots. On my ride from Paw Paw to Harper's Ferry along the C&O Canal I remember the scenery being amazing. I'm sure you'll see some of the same with more vistas. These next two days are going to be a real grind, but then you'll be able to coast into Williamsburg.

John Denver knew that the country roads of West Virginia were "almost heaven."

John Denver- "Take Me Home Country Roads"
    Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vrEljMfXYo

    Lyrics:
    Almost heaven, West Virginia
    Blue Ridge Mountains
    Shenandoah River -
    Life is old there
    Older than the trees
    Younger than the mountains
    Growin' like a breeze

    Country Roads, take me home
    To the place I belong
    West Virginia, mountain momma
    Take me home, country roads

All my memories gathered 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
    Misty taste of moonshine
    Teardrops in my eye

    Country Roads, take me home
    To the place I belong
    West Virginia, mountain momma
    Take me home, country roads

    I hear her voice
In the mornin' hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And drivin' down the road I get a feelin'
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

    Country Roads, take me home
    To the place I belong
    West Virginia, mountain momma
    Take me home, country roads

    Country Roads, take me home
    To the place I belong
    West Virginia, mountain momma
    Take me home, country roads
Take me home, now country roads
Take me home, now country roads
