July 11, Stage 5

July 11, another recovery day--Spokane to Sand Point in northern Idaho. 86 miles, 2700 feet of climbing. After spending some time getting out of Spokane, going by their beautiful court house, then back onto Route 2, which had brought us to Spokane yesterday. This was a biker's dream--15 mph wind out of the southwest and we were heading northeast! We had a nice shoulder and quite a bit of traffic. Starting to see some logging trucks. After about 50 miles, we turned off onto an older road parallel to Rt. 2. Very little traffic. Roller hills kind of like southern Iowa, but not as steep. Tree lined with tall pine, fir. Saw two Ospreys with nests atop telephone poles. Albeni Falls Dam, Pend Orielle Lake, Pend Lake. Got in by 2:30 and in the middle of the pack. Rode with two guys who do this each year--both 74 years old, so I do not have any bragging rights. Hot again, but with a tailwind, it does not matter. I am getting too much sun on my face, and lower lip is drying out and will likely split, but hey, this is fun! No need for Vitamin D supplement. Probable visit to the dermatologist along with the dentist. Marsha asked about meals (she has always fed me well). We have oatmeal for breakfast, along with fruit, OJ, coffee for those who prefer stimulants, bagels, peanut butter, jelly, usual stuff. Pactour cooks a meal along the route for lunch--today chicken fajitas and rice. Delicious. Dinner at local restaurants--on our own. Tomorrow Sand Point to Thompson Falls, Montana, looking out for wild and crazy folks. Meth is supposed to be popular up here. 86 miles. Cross Idaho at its narrowest, but I am counting it as a state I have crossed by bike. Ben has provided appropriate musical lyrics--"Idaho, Oh Idaho" today, and my 2.5 year old grandson Gabriel thinks I may need some EPO--he may be right.

  1. Good to hear you got a nice tailwind today. And glad they're feeing you well. I'm heading out for a backpacking trip to Halape (beach in Volcano NP), so I won't be able to see your blog or comment, but will be thinking about you as you start your long trek across Montana (guess you'll be spending more time there than any other state). Looks like you'll be going through Coeur D'Alene National Forest tomorrow. The Head and the Heart have a song called "Coeur D'Alene" and Jimmie Dale Gilmore has a good one called "Goodbye to Old Missoula"

    "Coeur D'Alene"
    Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jCrEZXOB2s
lyrics: Windblown whispers wind naked down the corridor
Thoughts leavin' my head, they twist through yours
What will become of these gestures that we made
I've given up my Bible, you moved out of state

Wearily waitin' on the wastin' of his days
    A sad son's smoldering soul
Give you three bucks for your sympathy and another for a cigarette
    The interaction feels so cold

Oh the songs people will sing for home
And for the ones that have been gone for too long
But oh the things people will do for the ones that they love

We're only here to find the love that lingers after
    The moment
So kiss me in the back room where the music plays
I know that it's not over

But oh the songs people will sing for home
And for the ones that have been gone for too long
Oh the things people will do for the ones that they love

    Break down the corridors
    La-da-da, da-da-da da da
    Break down the corridors
    La-da-da, da-da-da da

Messes that I haven't tried to clean up in a while

    You're in my soul now
You've gotta waste away with me
My mind's made up, I'm stayin' here with you

    There's no use knowin'
Which way the wind is blowin'
My mind's made up, I'm doin' this, I'm doin' this with you

    There's no use knowin'
Which way the wind is blowin'
My mind's made up, I'm doin' this, I'm doin' this

    You're in my soul now
You've gotta waste away with me

    "Goodbye to Old Missoula"
    Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9XBXVP5eS8
    Lyrics:
    Seaching for the sunlight
    On this winter's day.
    Here in old Missoula,
    They locked the sun away.
    Come tomorow morning
I'll head for the Bozeman round
And it's goodbye to old Missoula, sleepy town.
I met a girl named Rosie,
    Sweet as she could be.
    But I guess that Rosie
    Didn't have eyes for me.
    Time it waits for no-one
    Lord, why did I hesitate?
And it's goodbye to old Missoula, a day too late.
Clouds that hang on the mountain
    They make me lonesome inside.
And these four walls that surround me
They leave me no place to hide.
The show in this town is over
    Or maybe it never began
And it's goodbye to old Missoula, I've done all I can.

Goodbye, Rosie - you'll never know
And time says my love will pass
But if I can remember your smiling face
That's all of time that I ask
The show in this town is over
    Or maybe it never began
And it's goodbye to old Missoula, I've done all I can.
    Goodbye to old Missoula,
    Goodbye to old Missoula,
Goodbye to old Missoula, sleepy town.

  2. We'll miss you tomorrow, Ellery, on our ride to see our friends in New Virginia. Likely only Mark and me, but maybe we can get Andy to come along for the entier ride. In your honor, I may tack on a few extra miles to create a century. We'll tell Larry in New Virginia about your trip; he probably won't believe us. Watch out for the meth situation, although sounds like home in Iowa to an extent! You don't need EPO, just keep those green pills handy. Watching for you on Pac Tour photo site; so far no Ellery sightings, but we'll watch for the guy with the bloody lip. Take care of yourself and keep pedaling.

  3. ISN'T IT AMAZING THOSE OF YOUR COLLEGUES, FRIENDS, RELATIVES, BIKERS KEEPING UP WITH YOU. I GOT MY ATLAS OUT LAST NIGHT AND WILL BE FOLLOWING YOUR JOURNEY AND MARKING THE DATES. KIND OF FUN BUT YOU ARE HAVING THE MOST FUN. KEEP PEDALING AND TAKE CARE OF THOSE LIPS, VASELINE WORKS GREAT. WE NEED TO MAKE A CD WITH ALL THE MUSIC THEY ARE SENDING YOUR WAY.LOL

  4. Right you are, no need for any dditional Vitamin D! But hope you can lessen the lip ills somehow as that won't be comfortable nor easy on the food intake! All in all it sounds like a great ride! Ospreys are so cool and in fact I saw a few last summer at Cape Cod, also nesting up on the telephone pole tops. As for your bragging rights, you certainly can brag and certainly should regardless of the 74-year-olds! Can only imagine the vistas you're seeing and naturally the music Ben and Jojo are offering adds another dimension to your ride. Nice!
